Food Festival-2022, Faculty of Nursing

Food Festival-2022 is a practical event scheduled for the fulfillment of the Clinical Nutrition course module of the BSc Nursing degree program. This program is coordinated by the Department of Clinical Nursing, Faculty of Nursing., and students are assigned to perform a one-day cooking program. During this event, students demonstrate the knowledge and skills gained from the theory and lab practice of the Clinical Nutrition course module to plan appropriate menus for different categories of healthy people and patients In addition, students assess the patient’s or individual’s nutritional needs, calculate daily calory requirements, plan suitable menus, purchase food items and ingredients, prepare foods and display their dishes. This program helps to improve students’ critical thinking, the ability to transfer theoretical concepts into practice, creativity, and skills in financial management. It is a great opportunity for the students to build teamwork. This was the second food festival program conducted by the Department of Clinical Nursing, Faculty of Nursing.

The Food Festival 2022 was conducted by the students of the 2017/2018 Batch, BSc Nursing Degree Program on 30th June 2022. Students demonstrated their skills and prepared suitable dishes under the following themes.

  • Happy and healthy menus for pregnant and lactation mothers
  • Happy and healthy menus for aged 1-5 children
  • Happy and healthy menus for healthy adults
  • Happy and healthy menus for the patients with metabolic disorders

This program was financially supported by University of Colombo. Students were able to conduct this colorful event successfully by showing their skills in event management. In the end, all students and the staff tasted various dishes that were prepared and enjoyed the event by sharing foods with others.  Four student groups made presentations on their dishes by explaining the nutritional values of the dishes and their appropriateness for the different health conditions. The heartiest gratitude must be conveyed to the Head, academic and non-academic staff of the Department of Clinical Nursing. Prof. SSP Warnakulasuriya, Dean, Faculty of Nursing, and academic staff of the Department of Fundamentals of Nursing have graced the event.    Finally, Dean appreciated the students’ active participation and commitment to this event and specially acknowledged the staff who organize the event including Miss Ruwandi De Silva, course coordinator, Dr. G.Kisokanth, Head of the department, and academic and non-academic staff of the Department of Clinical Nursing.
