The Advanced Certificate in Child Care (NVQ Level 3 & 4) offered by the Department of
Clinical Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, University of Colombo, is a competency-based programme
designed to prepare professional child caregivers to provide safe, ethical, and developmentally
appropriate care. The course equips learners with essential knowledge and practical skills in
child growth and development, basic health and nutrition, safety, hygiene, infection prevention,
communication, and child protection.
The programme integrates theory with hands-on training under the guidance of qualified
healthcare and childcare professionals, enabling childcare givers to work effectively in homes,
childcare centres, preschools, hospitals, and community settings. This nationally recognised
qualification enhances employability and supports career opportunities both in Sri Lanka and
internationally, including pathways for overseas employment.
The Faculty of Nursing is an institution accredited by the Tertiary and Vocational Education
Commission (TVEC) of Sri Lanka, and the programme is aligned with the National Vocational
Qualifications (NVQ) framework.

Level: SLQF Level 2 / NVQ Level 3 & 4
Entry Requirements-
Applicants must:
 Have obtained at least a Credit pass in English at the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L)
examination.
Duration
 NVQ Level 3: 3 months (part-time)

 NVQ Level 4: 6 months (part-time)
Course Delivery
 Sessions conducted on Saturdays and Sundays
 Theory Sessions: 9.00 AM – 4.00 PM (online platforms)
 Practical & Clinical Training: 8.00 AM – 4.30 PM at the Faculty of Nursing, University
of Colombo

o NVQ Level 4: LKR 60,000

Upon successful completion of the Advanced Certificate in Child Care (NVQ Level 3),
participants will be able to
1.Prepare physical environment effectively and efficiently, ensuring compliance with health,
safety, and legal requirements appropriate to the relevant age group.
2.Ensure a safe and healthy environment for infants, toddlers, and children by applying
standard safety practices and maintaining appropriate supervision in child care settings.
3.Provide food and beverages for infants, toddlers, and children in a manner that maximises
satisfaction while maintaining required health, safety, and hygiene standards.
4.Promote holistic child development, including physical, social, emotional, cognitive,
language, and early literacy development, through developmentally appropriate activities and
supportive environments.
5.Maintain quality care for children with special needs, supporting the development of
communication skills and independence, and responding appropriately to physical, health and
safety, personal care, and daily living needs in accordance with established guidelines.
Upon successful completion of the Advanced Certificate in Child Care (NVQ Level 4),
participants will be able:
1.Prepare physical environment effectively and efficiently, ensuring compliance with health,
safety, and legal requirements appropriate to the relevant age group.
2.Ensure a safe and healthy environment for infants, toddlers, and children by applying
standard safety practices and maintaining appropriate supervision in childcare settings.
3.Provide food and beverages for infants, toddlers, and children in a manner that maximises
satisfaction while maintaining required health, safety, and hygiene standards.
4.Promote holistic child development, including physical, social, emotional, cognitive,
language, and early literacy development, through developmentally appropriate activities and
supportive environments.
5.Maintain quality care for children with special needs, supporting the development of
communication skills and independence, and responding appropriately to physical, health and
safety, personal care, and daily living needs in accordance with established guidelines
6.Administer medications and provide first aid in accordance with approved guidelines and
under appropriate supervision.
7.Carry out Child Care Centre Administration Activities efficiently with effective
coordination with parents/guardians and subordinates while maintaining good public relations.
