Advanced Certificate in Clinical Nursing Leadership

The concept of clinical leadership at the point of patient care is an area of increasing interest in health care organizations around the world. The growing literature on nursing, nurses were identified as essential for ensuring effective communication among members of a health care team and the continuity of patient-centered care. Nurses play a vital clinical leadership role in that they are the providers most likely to identify issues and response to the issues that require the coordination of responses of other health team members for timely care.

Clinical leadership is defined as staff nurse behaviors that provide direction and support to clients and the health care team in the delivery of patient care. A clinical leader is a registered nurse (RN) who coordinates patients, families and health care team members for the purpose of integrating the care they provide to achieve positive patient outcomes. Literature says that effective clinical leadership has been linked to a wide range of functions. It is a requirement of hospital care, including system performance, achievement of health reform objectives, timely care delivery, system integrity and efficiency, and is an integral component of the health care system. The importance of effective clinical leadership in ensuring a high-quality health care system that consistently provides safe and efficient care has been reiterated in the scholarly articles and various government reports.

It was noted that clinicians stated any frontline health care professionals, have opportunities to fulfill leadership roles. There is a concern that many health professionals may not be well prepared to understand the nature of leadership or take on leadership roles because of the lack of content on leadership in undergraduate course curricula. These deficiencies have been recognized by professional organizations and health service providers, especially in light of wide-ranging inquiries into the quality of health services in a number of countries.

By now, there is no clinical nursing leadership program developed and implemented by any institution in Sri Lanka, therefore,  considering the discussion that has occurred on the need for clinical leadership, this advance certificate in clinical leadership in nursing has been designed adapting to Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF) to address and fill the gap in leadership competency in clinical nursing. We applied the concepts; working with others (personal qualities, working with team, encouraging contribution), setting direction and managing services from the main concepts of the Medical Leadership Competency Framework and acting with integrity and self- awareness which were included in personal qualities, managing people from the main concept of managing services and encouraging innovation and ensuring patient safety from the main concept of improving services. All modules planned were based on these concepts to improve competency in clinical nursing leadership.
