Who Can Apply?
- The Principal Investigator or a Co-Investigator is a member of the permanent academic staff of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Colombo (including probationary staff), or a person who had retired from a permanent academic staff position in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Colombo.
- The Principal Investigator or a Co-Investigator is an Undergraduate or Postgraduate student of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Colombo.
Research Projects Considered for Ethical Review
The Committee reviews the following types of research:
• Nursing and midwifery research
• Clinical and healthcare-related research
• Public health and community-based research
• Educational research involving students, staff, patients, or healthcare professionals
• Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research
• Surveys, interviews, focus group discussions, and observational studies
• Research involving vulnerable populations, including children, older adults, and persons with disabilities
• Intervention and evaluation studies
• Undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects
• Collaborative and multidisciplinary research involving human participants
How to Submit Your Complete Application
The complete application consists of all of the following:
- Duly completed application form
- Checklist of contents, signed by the Principal Investigator
- The detailed research proposals, which must be correctly numbered and paginated
- Information sheets, consent forms, assent forms and questionnaire forms, where necessary in all three languages.
- Data collection forms, case record forms, study tools, duly signed material transfer agreements and other documents that are needed to carry out the research project
- A short, UpToDate curriculum vitae of each investigator
- For clinical trials: please include a one page summary of the clinical trial, a flowchart showing the trial protocol, and a Certificate of GCP training for at least one member of the research study.
It is mandatory to include the following at the bottom of the information sheet:
“This project has been approved by the Ethics Review Committee, Faculty of Nursing, University of Colombo. You may contact the committee if you wish to seek clarifications, record any concerns or make complaints about the study by calling 0112778944 (between 9 am and 4 pm) or by sending an email to erc@nursing.cmb.ac.lk”
Important Submission Guidelines:
• All these must be submitted as a soft copy (PDF) and a hard copy.
• A hard copy must be printed on both sides of the paper, Unbound.
• The title of the research project must be displayed as a heading at the top of the front page on each of these documents, in the language relevant to that particular document.
• All documents must be printed, and no handwritten documents are accepted.
• The soft copies of Translations must be submitted as PDF document.
Documents to be Submitted
One copy of each of the following should be attached.
• Duly completed application
• Covering letter (covering letter signed by both the applicant and the supervisor must be submitted for student research projects)
• Curriculum Vitae of all investigators
• The proposal (postgraduate students must submit a copy identical to that approved by the board of study)
• Study instruments in English, Sinhala and Tamil translations where relevant.
• Information sheet in English, Sinhala and Tamil where relevant.
• Consent forms in English, Sinhala and Tamil where relevant.
Deadline
• Applications are accepted between 9.30 am to 3.00 pm on working days of Faculty of Nursing, Department of Basic Sciences and Social Science for Nursing (Ground floor), University of Colombo.
• The deadline for receiving the complete application is 12 noon on the last working day of each month, by which time the complete application must be received at the Department of Basic Sciences and Social Science for Nursing. This must include the soft copies and hardcopies of all documents.

1. Please select “Application fees on ERC FON” for the Fee Type.
2. Select Visa or Master card type.
3. Enter your Name, NIC (National Identity Card Number) or Passport Number and select the currency (USD for foreign participants and LKR for local participants).
4. Enter the Amount based on your type of project.
5. Type the account number 837000800008 and first name of applicant for Payment Reference.
6. Then click the verify button.
7. Submit your information.
8. Check and confirm your details.
9. Enter your card details and proceed.
Important
You should submit the online payment confirmation receipt/screenshot to the REC. Therefore, it is important to take a printout of the receipt or take a screenshot of the transaction at the end of the process.Please mail the application, its relevant documents, and the paid bank receipt to the following mail address:

• In the deposit slip please include your name.
• A clear photo/scanned copy of the bank slip should be submitted.
